Zirconia Supported Porcelain

Porcelain teeth with zirconium substructure are generally used in processes such as prosthetic completion of anterior teeth, correction, smile design.

Wearing the teeth in the treatment process in appropriate sizes, adjusting the harmony with the opposite teeth, rehearsals are similar to metal-based prosthetic applications.

When it was first applied, single-tooth veneers were generally recommended only for anterior teeth, but as a result of the development of zirconium technology, it can be applied under appropriate conditions in all oral applications today.

In terms of time, it requires similar times with metal-based crown applications.

Zirconium Infrastructure Porcelain – In Brief

-It is frequently used in rear areas and bridge applications today.

-It has more light transmittance than metal-based porcelain coatings.

-There is no difference in usage with metal substructure coatings. Both are included in current dental treatments all over the world.

What is zirconium?

It is an element that was discovered in 1789 and is used in many industrial areas today. Zirconium metal, which has high resistance to corrosion, is preferred especially in corrosive environments. It is used in steel alloys, bricks, ceramics, scrapers, flash bulbs, lamp filaments, artificial precious stones and some deodorants, but also in products such as various surgical instruments and television glass.

It is used in hip joint prosthesis and various medical instruments, as well as in dentistry as implant material, crown infrastructure material, etc.

What is Zirconium Dental Veneer?

It is an aesthetic option in cases where the teeth are deformed, the teeth are in incompatible sizes compared to other teeth, the discoloration of the teeth cannot be resolved with other applications, the teeth are broken and weakened.

While zirconium was not used before in individuals with clenching, today it can also be used by directly scraping teeth with one-piece zirconia blocks without adding porcelain.

Zirconium Supported Porcelain Dental Treatment Stages

Zirconium supported porcelain applications are made by going through the following stages, similar to metal-based porcelains;

  • Taking panoramic x-rays, making treatment planning after intraoral examination (if necessary, periapical x-rays are also taken in some cases.).

  • Completion of these procedures if there are requirements such as gum problem, implant operation.

  • If procedures such as root canal treatment and filling are required, these procedures should be performed.

  • The necessary amount of abrasion of the teeth for the zirconium infrastructure and the preparation of the temporary teeth in the same session

  • Transferring the prepared teeth to the laboratory environment

  • Rehearsals of the prepared Zircon infrastructure and porcelain applied teeth

  • Adhering the prosthesis by making it compatible with the mouth.

The application of zirconia coatings into the mouth results in an average of 8-10 days from the measurement.

Can Zirconium Supported Porcelain be applied to everyone?

It is a material that can be applied in any situation where coating is required. It is not preferred in cases with closure that causes very high force, in very long bridges, in people where clenching cannot be alleviated and controlled. In such cases, metal porcelain veneers and monolithic zirconia teeth can be used.

Is zirconium an allergenic material?

Although zirconium material is generally defined as a non-allergic material, it can be said that this rate is low for zirconium, considering that allergy can develop against any material.

How long does it take to prepare Zirconium Backed Porcelain Veneer teeth?

In cases where there are no other treatments that can prolong the dental process, it can usually be completed within 8-10 days.

Does Zircon Backed Porcelain Veneer Break?

Zirconium supported porcelains used in dentistry have similar durability with metal-based porcelains. Their rigidity is higher than the metal infrastructure and therefore they do not have as much flexibility as metal.

Can Zirconium Veneer Teeth be Made for Individuals with Clenching (Bruxist)?

The treatment plan that should be done first in individuals with clenching should be to start with controlling the clenching. Otherwise, no matter what material the coating is made, the probability of breakage will be high. Zirconium coating can be considered after tightening is controlled by processes such as splint application, masseter botox application. Generally, monolithic zirconium is the first choice when zirconium crown teeth are made in individuals with a history of clenching (bruxism). Thus, zirconium with increased thickness becomes less fragile.

Can Zirconium Veneer Teeth at All Ages Be Made?

It can be done at any age after the chin development is completed. It can be applied at any age as long as there is no health problem that may prevent treatment. If porcelain teeth with metal or zirconia are applied before the development of the jaw, they are generally not preferred before the age of 18 because they may slow down the development of the jaw and cause the area to be applied while other areas are developing.

Can Zircon Veneer Teeth Be Made on Implants?

Permanent teeth planned on the implant can also be made with zirconium support if the conditions are suitable. If necessary, zirconium supported porcelain teeth, glass ceramic or zirconium abutments are applied on the implant from time to time.
