How much information do we need to manage our health well? I wonder if we know that we should eat more fruits and vegetables, stay away from sugary drinks and processed foods, eat more whole grains and foods containing dietary fiber, not use sugary and salty foods, exercise regularly, sleep at least 6 hours a night, and avoid constant stress, is it enough?

This information is good resources for setting goals for improving our health and reducing the burden of chronic diseases; however, these are not enough to improve the health and functions of each individual. This is because this information is based on clinical trial results, for which average values ​​have been obtained to apply to the general population.

Let’s say an individual has gluten sensitivity, how accurate is it to recommend a whole grain diet to this person? Offering a diet rich in saturated fat to a person at high risk of heart disease or Alzheimer’s disease, either because of the Apo E4 polymorphism; or ignoring that if a person with vitamin D receptor polymorphism does not take more vitamin D than the recommended amount of vitamin D in the population average, he will be exposed to various diseases, especially osteoporosis; similarly, due to the genetic predisposition in homocysteine ​​metabolism, how accurate is it to follow the general recommendations without making him use more B vitamins? showing a few examples. Today we need to think about this gene-related information, as we do with diet, when adjusting for individual exercise needs, nutritional supplements, and sensitivities associated with environmental factors. Only in this way, individuals can perform the individual health management required by their own health. Clinicians also use this information as a guide to help their patients become the healthiest.

There is much more development happening around us in terms of individuality. For nearly ten years, a new trend has emerged in which people measure and monitor their functional, physiological, physical and cognitive performances with health and fitness devices and direct their lives. Thanks to these devices, it was possible to access data on exercise duration, intensity, oxygen use, heart rate, blood pressure values, sleep quality and duration, and calories consumed moment by moment. Innovative individuals using it have already started to work to realize the way of life they envision for themselves.

However, thanks to ongoing studies and technological devices, people learn more comprehensive health data and begin to act to maximize their own and their loved ones’ lives in terms of health. These devices give you the opportunity to instantly notice the body mass index, body fat percentage, blood pressure and blood sugar status without hurting. To give an example, it is now possible to instantly monitor how fast an edible food item raises blood sugar.

In the very near future, thanks to the increasingly widespread wearable technologies, individuals will be able to instantly recognize their physiological and psychological values, learn the suggestions about what to do and not to do, and immediately apply the precautions. For this reason, the field defined as “Quantified Self-Digitization-Self-Measurement” will become very widespread. Thanks to mobile phone applications suitable for these, it will be a rising trend for individuals to take care of their own health at all times, and to strive to make and keep themselves healthier as a whole.

With the technology that exists today, there are people who follow their own data, but there may often be a need for a guide on how to use this data and which way they choose, better results for their health can be achieved. Some researchers and innovators predict that “Health Coaches” will be an indispensable part of this developing health and wellness field.

In the coming days, due to devices, data, questions and requirements, the field of “Self-Digitizing” will become increasingly widespread and will create an order that is used not only by people close to technology, but by the general public; they will likely lead to a revolutionary start in the healthcare industry as we know it.

How is my approach?

All these areas I mentioned make up my work area. With an approach currently applied in the most developed countries of the world, we start our work after analyzing the genetic background of individuals and investigating their existing disease susceptibility. Generally, people who apply to me are overweight, have insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and are at risk for cardiovascular diseases. My goal is to prevent the diseases to which the people around me and those who apply to me are prone, to improve the state of being healthy and to ensure healthy aging. In this sense, I guide individuals in managing this situation by using all the equipment at my disposal.

At the beginning of our work, together with my clients, we prepare a nutrition program suitable for their genetic predispositions. Let’s not think of it as a diet list, but rather a study on how we can evolve our nutrition to stay healthy for life… Of course, quantities, calories and ingredients are always talked about. In particular, I prescribe nutritional supplements that suit existing disease predispositions.

However, together with my clients, we also draw up an exercise prescription suitable for their genetic structure. While doing this, I also follow my patient with some activity meters, body analyzers and blood pressure monitors as needed. In fact, what is more important than my follow-up is that people learn to follow their own health data in the light of concrete data and try to shape their lives accordingly. Of course, this is a process, and in this process, I follow and support my patient constantly, create a positive psychological environment, and cooperate together to achieve our common goal.

There is continuous education on this path, I also organize trainings on topics such as health and diseases, stress management, with the support of both myself and various professionals, so that my patient can embody his condition and assume responsibility.

However, we know that all areas of our lives affect our health; Our relationships, career, social environment, spirituality affect our existence even more than the food we take. During our work, we inevitably fall on these areas as well.

That’s why this program is a very tiring, bumpy road that often takes six months to implement lifestyle change from being a simple diet management program. There are many tools we use on this road, the most important of which is to believe in ourselves, to know that we can do it and to get strength from each other. The point where all these efforts have brought us is a healthy, energetic, productive, happy “ME” and this place is worth everything.
