What is Smile Design?

Being able to laugh comfortably and safely is one of the most important factors affecting and determining one’s self-confidence and socio-cultural stance in life. Individuals who cannot smile comfortably over the years may develop unpleasant habits such as hiding their smile with their hands or laughing without opening their lips without realizing it. With the smile design methods in dentistry, every individual can have an aesthetic and happy smile.

Smile design is the process of making your smile more beautiful with one or more aesthetic dentistry procedures. Some of these procedures are: Dental laminates, composite filling applications, implants and teeth whitening. Smile design applications are performed for many reasons and are shaped specifically for the patient. Some of the components that your dentist will review with you regarding your smile and that can be improved with aesthetic dentistry procedures include:

Thread Length

Long teeth provide a youthful appearance. If the size of your teeth is smaller than the ideal portions, they can be brought to the desired dimensions with minor corrections in the gums, composite fillings or laminated porcelain.

Smile Line

The smile line is an imaginary line that follows the tips of your upper teeth from one side of your mouth to the other. Ideally, when you laugh, this line is the same as the line formed by your lower lip.

Proportion of Teeth

According to most people, the two teeth in the center are dominant in a beautiful smile, and the width/length ratio of these teeth should be closest to the golden ratio on the face. Width and length adjustments are made according to this ratio.

Surface Tissue of the Tooth

Your dentist can characterize your crowns or porcelain veneers to create a more feminine or masculine appearance.

Amount of Gums Revealed

In an aesthetic smile, when the individual smiles, the gums are either not visible or are barely visible. If the gums appear more than 2 mm while smiling, this may negatively affect the aesthetics. With gingival surgeries, the amount of appearance of the gingiva can be changed.

In order to design an aesthetic smile, it is of great importance that both the proportional relations between the teeth themselves and the good harmony between the teeth and the entire face. The thickness of the lips, skin color, the length and width of the face, the structure of the nose and chin, the distance between the corners of the lips and the amount of gingiva that appear when smiling are evaluated in detail with the photographs taken from our patients. In the light of these values, the teeth are designed in the closest way to the golden ratio on the face.

The treatment plan is created specifically for each patient, and within 7-10 days of starting the treatment, patients can regain their new smiles.
