Hallux valgus, that is, spontaneous and permanent outward orientation of the big toe, is a disease that is more common especially in women. One of the main reasons for this is wearing high heels and pointed-toed shoes for a long time. In women who wear such shoes for a long time, the incidence of Hallux valgus increases starting from the age of 40.
What is hallux valgus?
Hallux valgus is a foot disease that manifests itself with the spontaneous and permanent orientation of the big toe to the outside, the formation of a painful bone protrusion on the inner side of the foot, in the area where the big toe articulates with the comb bone, and the enlargement of the foot in the area of the comb bones.
It makes walking difficult due to pain, and it affects human life negatively by making it difficult to wear shoes due to the enlargement of the foot and bone protrusion. As a result of pressure disorder, painful calluses may develop on the soles of the feet.
Who gets hallux valgus?
Hallux valgus can be seen in everyone, it does not distinguish between men and women. Some people have a tendency to hallux valgus because of the features they are born with and related to the shape of the foot. However, it is known that narrow, pointed-toed and high-heeled shoes cause hallux valgus. For this reason, it is seen much more frequently in women who live in cities and wear pointy-toed and high-heeled shoes. Women who have been wearing such shoes for years have a higher incidence of hallux valgus, which makes it difficult to use shoes and walk, especially starting at the age of 40. However, it can sometimes be seen at a much younger age.
What is the treatment of hallux valgus?
There are a number of devices used to prevent or treat the progression of hallux valgus, but they do not cure the disease and generally do not prevent its progression. The treatment of hallux valgus is surgery.
There is a belief, especially among women, that this surgery is very difficult, is that true?
No, it’s not true. Today, in modern centers, these surgeries are performed with an anesthetic method called epidural anesthesia, so patients do not have any pain after the operation. It is possible to operate on both feet of the patients together. Patients stay in the hospital for only one day and start walking at home the next day. In about 20 days, they can go out on the street.
What kind of surgery is this?
There are many surgical methods applied for hallux valgus. It is not appropriate to apply a single surgical technique to every patient. Which surgery will be performed on the patient is decided according to the patient’s age, social status, anatomical features of the foot, and most importantly, how advanced the hallux valgus is. Before the operation, measurements are made on the x-rays taken while standing, together with the characteristics of the foot, and according to the results of these, the most appropriate surgical method is applied to the patient.
Does hallux valgus recur after surgery?
It cannot be repeated with a correctly selected and correctly applied surgery for the patient. Patients wear shoes more easily and walk more comfortably.
