Depression, the dictionary meaning of which is depression, is a frequently encountered psychiatric illness. Everyone in life may experience some difficulties and problems from time to time. Depressed people often experience some of the conditions such as loss of energy, change in appetite, sleeping less or more, anxiety, decreased concentration, indecision, restlessness, feeling worthless, guilty or hopeless, self-harm or suicidal thoughts. Depression is something that can happen to anyone.

There are different subtypes of depression. According to the classification system of the American Psychiatric Association, the subgroups of depression are:

1. Major depressive disorder.

2. Dysthymic disorder.

3. Depression in bipolar disorder.

4. Depression due to a general medical condition.

5. Adjustment disorder with depression.

6. Depressive disorder not otherwise specified.

a- Premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

b- Minor depressive disorder.

c- Recurrent brief depressive disorder.

No matter where in the world it is done, all studies have revealed that depression is twice more common in women than in men. Depressed men are more likely to use alcohol and drugs than women.

It is known that depressed women are more willing to seek professional help than men, while men delay getting support until the severe stage of depression.

The main symptoms of depression can be listed as follows:

What can you do if you think you are depressed?

• Talk to someone you trust about your feelings. Most people feel better after talking to someone who cares about them.

• Seek help from experts. Your healthcare professional or doctor is a good place to start.

• Remember that you can get better with the right help.

• Do the activities you enjoy doing when you are well.

• Protect your bonds. Keep in touch with your family and friends.

• Exercise regularly, even for a short walk.

• Stick to regular eating and sleeping habits.

• Acknowledge that you may be depressed and change your expectations. Remember that you often don’t feel as competent as you used to.

• Avoid or limit alcohol use and avoid using drugs. These habits can worsen depression.

• If you have suicidal thoughts, contact someone for help right away.

Treatment of depression

After the diagnosis phase is carried out by a psychiatrist, a plan for the treatment of depression can be made. In the treatment of depression, drug therapy, psychotherapy methods, and brain stimulation techniques applied especially for those who have intense depression can be used.

If the depression is mild, psychotherapy alone may be sufficient. Studies show that the coordination of psychotherapy along with drug therapy is very effective.

Cognitive therapy models such as Cognitive Behavioral therapy, Emdr therapy, Eft techniques are very effective in the treatment of depression. With psychotherapy, the emotion, thought and behavior patterns of the client are reconsidered, and dysfunctional thoughts are revealed and reconsidered, and sessions are organized for change.
