How to Conduct a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Session?

It is important to progress systematically while conducting Cognitive Behavioral Therapy sessions. The structure of CBT sessions consists of three main elements: Introduction part – Middle part of the session – End of the session.

In the introductory part of the session; A therapeutic closeness is established with the client, an agenda is set for the problem and a mood assessment is made. If homework was given in the previous session, homework control should also be provided in the introduction.

In the middle part of the session; A formulation is made by working on a specific problem. Then, the client gains problem-solving skills with cognitive behavioral techniques.

In the last part of the session; A summary of the session is given and the homework that is required to be fulfilled until the next session is planned. The session is terminated by receiving feedback from the client about the session.
