What is bruxism (teeth grinding)?

Bruxism, commonly known as teeth grinding or clenching, is the condition of clenching the jaws as a result of strong muscle movements. It is usually seen during sleep, but sometimes it is noticed that people clenched their teeth during the day.

Bruxism may be due to the different positioning of the teeth in the mouth, incorrectly made fillings and prostheses in the mouth, the condition of the jaw muscles of the person. However, psychological factors are seen as the most common cause. It has been observed that teeth clenching habits increase during stressful periods.

Symptoms of bruxism;

squeaking sound while sleeping

severe headache when the person wakes up in the morning

pain in the jaw joint and cheek muscles

Hearing a sound from the jaw joint while opening and closing the mouth

wear on tooth surfaces

formation of fractures and cracks in teeth and fillings

loosening of teeth

Teeth grinding is a habit that can be treated. The aim of treatment is to prevent damage to the teeth and joint and to relieve pain. Night plaques, which are prepared by dentists in accordance with the patient’s mouth and prevent the contact of the chewing surfaces of the teeth, are the most commonly preferred method in the symptomatic treatment of teeth clenching. With the use of night plates in line with the physician’s recommendation, the muscles adapt to the new situation after a certain period of time and the person abandons the habit of clenching. In addition to the night plate, muscle relaxants, psychotherapy, tens application or botox application to the jaw muscles are the treatment options.
