Exam anxiety is an anxiety that prevents the use of the learned information during the exam, causes the student to feel the fear of failure intensely and to show these negative emotions with physical symptoms.

The meaning that the child attributes to the exam may be laying the foundations of exam anxiety. The thought that his future depends on this exam, pressure from parents and teachers, or high expectations are created in the child to think if I fail. By generalizing this feeling of failure, the child may cause his personality to be affected as well. Adding new negative thoughts on top of this thought will take test anxiety to a serious level.

In a child experiencing test anxiety, this anxiety manifests itself physically and psychologically. physical symptoms; while nausea, sweating, stomach pain, insomnia or excessive sleep, dry mouth, psychological symptoms are; restlessness, constant uneasiness, anxiety, decrease in attention and concentration, decrease in self-worth, the thought that I will fail, and the feeling of guilt for not meeting the expectations of parents and teachers.

These children are extremely uncomfortable talking about the exam. When you say you want to talk, you cause feelings of anger and uneasiness in the child. In addition, they show a certain decrease in their success in the lessons, they encounter results such as reluctance to study or not being able to reach the expected performance despite being constantly working. The thinking behind this is that I won’t be able to do it no matter what. In order not to face this situation, they avoid taking exams. I’m not ready for the exam now, I’m going to take the exam next week, I can’t do it, I’m stupid, thoughts like what will happen if I take the exam, it will go bad again, take over the child.

What should I do to deal with test anxiety?

The next thing to do is to question the reality of the thought that causes anxiety. As a result of this questioning, there are some applications that will be beneficial to get rid of unrealistic thoughts.

Breathing and relaxation exercises, completing the responsibilities that must be fulfilled as a result of thoughts that cause anxiety, and sharing this situation with parents and teachers will help the child. In addition, doing attention exercises for the problem of focusing helps the study process to pass efficiently. If anxiety cannot be controlled despite all this, it would be beneficial to consult a psychologist.
