Here are the things to consider in nutrition against kidney stones…

Calcium phosphate, uric acid and cystine stones are less common kidney stones. Calcium oxalate stone is the more common kidney stone. If there is a calcium phosphate stone, proteins from animal foods such as meat, milk, eggs, yogurt should be reduced. If there are uric acid and cystine stones, salt should be reduced and the amount of water should be increased.

Calcium oxalate stones are a type of kidney stone that are both more common and have tricks that need more attention. People with calcium oxalate stones should consume less foods such as coffee, cola, chocolate, cocoa foods, nuts, buckwheat bread, seeds, beets, and spinach.

One of the most important factors in oxalate intake is black tea consumption. Black tea is very rich in oxalate, so it affects it directly.

Other than tea, excessive consumption of coffee, insufficient consumption of water, excessive consumption of salt, excessive intake of oxalate-rich vegetables and protein of animal origin are factors that increase the risk.

Since vegetables usually contain high oxalate, vegetables with low oxalate content should be consumed as much as possible. The amount of oxalate is high in dark green leafy vegetables. Vegetables such as spinach, purslane, beets, turnips, green beans, okra are in this class. The amount is low in broccoli, brussels sprouts and regular cabbage.

As much as possible, vegetables should be boiled, cooked after draining, and calcium sources such as yoghurt, cheese and milk should be found while consuming.

Red plum and damson plum have acid-making properties. Oxalate stones precipitate much more easily in an acidic environment.

Strawberries and kiwis are also oxalate-rich fruits. For this reason, fruits such as strawberries and kiwi should be avoided.

Oilseeds such as hazelnuts, peanuts and almonds are very rich in oxalate. Therefore, it should be reduced or not consumed.

Having an ideal weight is also very important for kidney health and individuals with kidney stones. However, rapid weight loss should also be avoided.

Water consumption is one of the most effective methods in the treatment of kidney stones and in general kidney health. Daily water consumption should be 2.0-2.5 liters.
