Vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of contracting covid-19 and having a severe disease!

With the recent increase in the number of Covid-19 cases, we understand better how important it is to be vaccinated and keep the immune system strong. Since 2019, many studies have been carried out on Covid-19. These studies give us information about the symptoms of the disease and how we can best manage the disease process. The issue I want to talk about is the issue of Covid-19 and vitamin D. Vitamin D is a group of sterols with hormone-like functions. Vitamin D, which is in the group of fat-soluble vitamins, exists in two main forms, D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol). D2 form of vegetable origin such as mushrooms, fortified (enriched) foods; It is possible to say that the D3 form is of animal origin such as fatty fish, liver, egg yolk. In addition, 7-dehydrocholesterol is also metabolized (turned into active D3 form) in the body (liver and kidneys) by being converted to the previtamin D3 form in the skin with sunlight (UV-B).

It is a very common situation that the need for vitamin D cannot be met with food and its deficiency is seen. In studies, it has been observed that the lack of vitamin D can increase the risk of Covid-19 infection and the possibility of serious transmission of the disease. In a meta-analysis of 23 studies (with a total of 11,901 participants), people with vitamin D deficiency were approximately 3 times more likely to be infected with SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19), and patients with vitamin D deficiency were approximately 5 times more likely to have the disease. times higher has been reported.

Vitamin D, one of the blood parameters, should be checked, and the amount of vitamin D to be taken should be consulted with the physician.

Daily “safe” vitamin D amounts recommended by EFSA, the European Union Food Safety Association:

25 mcg – 1000 IU for 0-2 years old

25 mcg – 1000 IU for ages 2-10

50 mcg – 2000 IU for 11-17 year olds

It is 100 mcg – 4000 IU for 18 years and older.

Note: It is known that the D3 form is more effective in increasing the level of vitamin D in the blood.
