Use of Stem Cells in Gonarthrosis (Calcification) Treatment

Gonarthrosis is a disease that is frequently seen in our society and causes our patients to apply to our outpatient clinic with knee pain, difficulty walking and deformity.

Treatment of gonarthrosis is mainly divided into medical and surgical.

In medical treatment, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory preparations containing glucosamine chondroitin sulfate are used, intraarticular hyaluronic acid and PRP (platelet reach plasma) applications are made.

The purpose of this article is to inform our patients about stem cell application in patients with gonarthrosis.

                           What is Stem Cell?

Our body also has cells that can constantly renew themselves and have the ability to differentiate. stem cells is called. Another feature of stem cells, which are the main cells in the human body that can transform into any type of body cell, is that they form many new stem cells from a single cell. Stem cells are the main

  • from the umbilical cord,

  • from the amniotic membrane,

  • from the placenta,

  • from Bone Marrow,

  • They are produced from Adipose Tissue.

Stem Cell obtained from Adipose Tissue;

Adipose tissue (adipose) consists of a combination of fat cells. 10-15% of the total body weight of a healthy and adult individual is adipose tissue; It is a rich source of cells that can be used in the repair and regeneration of damaged tissues of the musculoskeletal system.

Adipose-derived stem cells; They secrete growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). With this feature, it increases angiogenesis (vessel formation), provides oxygen and nutrient transport to the injected area and activates repair mechanisms.

                       What is stem cell therapy?

Stem cell therapy; It is a treatment method that aims to reveal the body’s own healing potential as a result of injecting stem cells isolated from a part of the body (usually fat tissue or bone marrow) to the damaged area of the body.

There are various methods of obtaining stem cells. The most commonly used method is the stem cell method obtained from adipose tissue, due to its richness of stem cells, being economical, and benefits such as ease of preparation and application.

With this method, a small amount of adipose tissue is taken by the method of lipoaspiration (fat removal). A stem cell-rich tissue is obtained in a short time by using a series of natural methods. This collection of stem cells rich in stem cells; It is applied to the damaged area to repair the tissues damaged for any reason and to return them to their natural state.

Injected into the damaged area of the body lipocell,It is a system that ensures the continuity of Pericytes (the cell in the connective tissue-origin capillaries that can turn into macrophages) that separate them from the capillaries and turn into active mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in response to damage.

The application takes approximately 20-30 minutes and consists of 3 stages;

  1. Filtration

  2. lipoaspiration

  3. Washing, Separation, Obtaining purified adipose tissue

    Are there any side effects in stem cell therapy?

There is no serious pain or damage reported in the stem cell injected area. There may be a small amount of pain in the application area, although it is rare. There are no restrictions for patients to continue their normal activities.

In addition, the area where lipoaspiration is performed is max. It heals in 7-8 days.
