Things to Know About the Psychological Counseling Process

Everyone may need psychological support due to events, situations or emotions that they cannot cope with at some point in their life. In this period when their emotions are very sensitive, the support to be received is of great importance for the person. This can lead to inconsistent expectations about the psychological counseling process.

There are a few important pieces of information I would like to point out about this process.

  1. First of all, the psychological counseling process is a “process”. Expecting immediate results from the first session will most likely be disappointing. Patiently and patiently meeting with your psychologist/psychological counselor, sticking to the intervals you have set, will greatly help you achieve your goals.

  2. Knowing that the mental health professional you receive psychological support from is not your “saviour” will be very useful for the process. “I will go and tell my problem. He will tell me what to do. He will tell me such a thing that all my problems will disappear.” The thought of this will cause you to not benefit from the process, to despair and perhaps to leave the negotiations with the thought of failure. In your quest for help, your counselor helps you understand yourself and take action to be your own savior. So it doesn’t give you fish, it teaches you how to fish.

  3. “Awareness”, “Being Aware”, “Noticing” is the most important element of the consultancy process. Situations that disturb us, feelings that we cannot cope with, etc. It is not possible to intervene in those things without knowing what is going on within ourselves (What am I thinking? What am I feeling?). Awareness can sometimes bring with it pain, anger, mourning, and depression. This is also quite healthy and sometimes even something to have. Just like in real life, it is unrealistic to expect happiness and feeling good all the time in the counseling process.

  4. How much benefit from the psychological counseling process depends on the client’s effort. Even if the best solution is found in the session, if the client does not take action and take responsibility in this direction, the result will not be satisfactory.

  5. Psychological counseling sessions are usually scheduled once a week at first. However, the mental health professional you talk to will determine the most appropriate interview frequency for you. It may be appropriate for some clients to come twice a week, for others to come once every 2 weeks.

  6. The date and time of the appointment you set with your consultant days in advance belongs to you. The counseling room is reserved for you. Your counselor prepares for you before the interview. They are waiting for you ready for you. In case of cancellations made less than 24 hours before, it is considered that a consultancy meeting has been made. And a consulting fee is requested. This situation may be misunderstood by the clients and as a result may cause a natural feeling of anger. However, this framework is both to protect the therapeutic relationship, which is a very important factor for the counseling process, and to underline that continuing the sessions is an important responsibility that the person has taken for himself.

Are you ready to be your own savior, to return your energy to the person who really deserves it and invest in him? With love…
