Symptoms of delayed speech

Speech is the most important element necessary for people to tell each other their feelings and thoughts, wishes and needs. Language must be acquired in order for speech to take place. Children react to the sounds they hear from the moment they are born. It is possible even in the womb. Language development in children begins to occur gradually from the first month.

* Babbling starts in the first 2 months.

*5. From 5 months, they make vowel sounds of their mother tongue.

*After 6 months, there are repetitions such as father-ba, da-da. These are called vocal gymnastics.

They start to say their first words around 1 year old.

* At 18 months, they can speak 5-6 words.

*At the age of 2, they can form 2-word sentences. (They have a vocabulary of 10-50 words. They know the names of things and animals.)

*At the age of 3, they can form three-word sentences.

*At the age of 4, they can make sentences close to the level of adults.

The language development process of children and the number of words they use in their sentences are parallel with their age.

2- They express their wishes with signs, gestures and facial expressions.

3- When what they say is not understood, they get angry and shout.

4-They are reluctant and indifferent to the environment.

First of all, it should be investigated whether there is any hearing loss in the child or whether there is a structural disorder in the mouth, palate, lip. If there is no hearing problem, it should be evaluated by a Child-Adolescent psychiatrist. It should be investigated whether there is a neurological problem. After all these scans, if a problem is detected, the necessary diagnosis and treatment should be made according to the nature of the problem, and then support from a speech and language therapist should be sought. The child does not have any of these factors, but environmental factors, parents’ attitudes and lack of stimuli can cause speech delay. In such a case, help from a speech and language therapist should be sought. If they are noticed and supported early at this age, they can catch up with their peers. However, if the problem is ignored and the child is left to himself, it is likely that there will be difficulties in reading and writing skills in his future life.


1-Avoid asking questions, instead comment on the child’s work.

2-Have fun together. Use gestures, sing, make sounds.

3-Make fun challenges. For example, dressing the mate of your socks differently. Pretend you don’t understand. Give him the opportunity to speak.

4- Keep your sentences short. For example; “now it’s time to eat”, “wow”, “you built a tower” etc.

5-Repeat what he says, expand it and say it again. For example, he said “this” instead of water. Expand what he says, “You want me to give you water.”

6-Speak the word correctly, but do not emphasize the mistake in a way that will cause the child to lose self-confidence. Just repeat the correct word after the child.

7-Read interactive books.

8-Always try to make eye contact while speaking.

9-Avoid baby talk.

10-Create common interests. Whatever the situation he is currently interested in, start a conversation about that topic.

11-Make them demand their requests by voice, not by mark. Convert the sounds it makes into words and pronounce the correct word.

12-Put the things he wants out of his reach and make him demand it from you.
