Stress at work

As it is known, stress is a psychological condition that we encounter in every aspect of our lives. Sometimes it has good results for us, and sometimes it can turn out badly. Some of the duties and responsibilities that the working life imposes on the individual cause some stress situations in the employee. The increase in the burden of the duties assigned to the employee in the society also affects the desire to work.

But what is this stress encountered in working life, good or bad? Let’s take a look:

The word stress is of Latin origin and comes from ‘estrictia’. Stress; It is a state of tension that occurs in individuals due to unusual demands, pressures and opportunities.

We can also describe stress as the modern disease of our century. No matter what field a person works in, he is faced with the concept of stress from time to time. However, the level of stress increases and decreases according to the content and structure of the job. The individual who is exposed to stress for a long time becomes dependent on this stress and various psychological and physical disorders occur. As long as the person is able to cope with stressful events, he can keep himself away from excessive tension and negativity.

Stress is not simply a state of anxiety or just nervous tension, as one might think. However, it cannot be said that it is completely avoidable or harmful.

Stress, often known as negative, does not always have a bad and undesirable outcome. Even a certain amount of stress leads to success.

Business life has an important place in the life of today’s people and people spend most of their time thinking about work or working. The stress seen in one of the employees also reflects on his colleagues and the safety of the society. While every job has some difficulty and complexity, it is also annoying with workload and responsibility. In cases where stress in business life is not given due importance, job dissatisfaction occurs in employees.

A stress-free work environment brings monotony. The monotony of the work environment can also create high levels of distress and tension. For this reason, experiencing moderate stress creates positive effects on employees by throwing back the monotonous work environment. The more the individual works in a work environment that gives him pleasure, the more his productivity increases and he is satisfied with his work. Thus, it is less affected by stress.

There are many stress factors in the work environment. At the beginning of all of them is the “overwork-too much work” load. Doing a lot of work in a certain period of time and the responsibility it imposes on the person causes tension and stress. Another factor is related to change. If the individual likes to do tasks that challenge and excite himself, he is less affected by stress. However, if they perceive change as a frightening factor for them, it is inevitable that they will be more affected by stress.

Another important stress factor is job evaluation. Employees actually do not like to be evaluated by someone else because they do not believe that this evaluation can be adequate and objective. A biased and inadequate evaluation causes stress.

The high workload imposes a heavy duty-responsibility on the employee. In every business environment, order and conviction should be established regarding the amount of work done during working hours. During the determination of the work to be done by the employee, the selections should be made together in accordance with his motivation.

Along with the difficulties and responsibilities of working life, psychological support should be provided for the individual to increase stress, and some information should be given by experts. By explaining what stress is, the factors that cause this stress in the employee should be evaluated. The symptoms of stress and how to cope with stress should be taught to individuals.

Stress Symptoms

After a period of exposure to stress, employees begin to show various symptoms depending on the stress they are exposed to. These symptoms are psychological symptoms, physical symptoms and behavioral symptoms.

1.Psychological Symptoms: It can be stated as tense mood, incompatibility, irritability, emotionality, constant anxiety, feeling of inadequacy, unnecessary haste and frustration.

2.Physical Symptoms: Factors harmful to the human body return to the individual with a number of symptoms in their physical functions. These; high blood pressure, digestive (digestive) disorders, difficulty in breathing, forgetfulness, pain in the head, weakness, nausea, cramps and allergies.

3. Behavioral Symptoms: There are clear, direct and direct effects on the behavior of the individual in stressful situations. These; sleep problems (oversleeping or not being able to sleep at all), decrease in appetite or increase in eating, difficulty in speaking, increase in smoking and alcohol use.
