What is special education?

Special education; These are the studies conducted for children who have differences in their physical, mental, emotional, behavioral and social developments, who cannot develop within their capacity with normal education, who cannot benefit from normal education services sufficiently, and who need special education services, psychological and academic support.

* Who is the special education study for?

Special education studies; It is aimed at children who have differences in their physical, mental, emotional, behavioral and social developments, cannot develop within their capacity with normal education, cannot benefit from normal education services sufficiently, and need special education services, psychological and academic support.

Children who need special education support can be classified under the following headings:

1- Those with communication disorders:

  • Autism

  • Asperger’s syndrome

2- Those who are mentally different

  • mental retardation

  • Superior mind

3- Those with adjustment and behavioral disorders:

  • attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder

  • defiant and disruptive behavior disorder

  • tics

4- Those who are different in terms of learning:

  • reading difficulties

  • difficulty writing

  • math learning disability

5- Those with physical differences:

  • Those with vision problems

  • Those with hearing problems

  • Those with speech problems

  • Those with orthopedic problems

* What is the goal of special education?

As in the education of all children, in the education of children who have differences in their physical, mental, emotional, behavioral and social developments, it is aimed for them to continue their lives without being dependent on others in the future, to become self-sufficient and to integrate with the society.

In line with this purpose, the child’s ability to communicate, to do self-care (dressing, nutrition, cleaning), to acquire the necessary skills in home life (use of household goods, preparing food), to establish social relations, to support academic skills, to support his academic skills, such as leisure and work, through special education studies. It is aimed to develop adaptive skill areas.

* The role of parents in special education:

Special education studies are carried out in institutions and by experts who have received training on this subject. However, the fact that the education is not limited to this plays an important role in reaching the skills that are aimed to be supported by the parents at home, as well as the program implemented by the expert.

The results of the research show that when parents are educated, they directly participate in education and can help their children.
