Miniscrew applications in orthodontics

The necessity of patient cooperation, especially in the use of extra-oral appliances, has led orthodontists to seek treatment methods that do not require patient cooperation and shorten the treatment time by providing continuous anchorage control. As a result of the studies, the use of intraosseous screws and mini plates has come to the fore.

There are many screw brands and types produced for orthodontic use.

Advantages of mini screws used for orthodontic purposes

1) Easy to insert into the mouth
2) It can be easily disassembled at the end of the treatment
3) They are small in size, applicable to many areas
4) Force can be applied in a short time after being placed

Screws can be placed in various regions according to the desired tooth movement. They are applied to the middle of the palate, the upper jawbone, the oblique edge of the lower jaw, and most often the bony compartment between two teeth.

The clinical application of the screws is simple. After the anesthesia is applied to numb only the gingiva of the area where the screw will be placed, the screws are placed at the appropriate inclination by means of a special driver.
It is checked by periapical x-ray whether the screw is placed properly or not.

Thanks to the screws, all kinds of tooth movements are made easier and in a shorter time.

The advantage of mini plates over screws is that they can be loaded with heavy forces, but with the development of the properties of screws and their ability to be loaded with heavier forces, they have lost their former popularity. In addition, mini plaques cannot be placed in every region. Their prices are also more expensive than mini screws.
It is especially preferred in cases that require the molar teeth to be embedded in the treatment of open bite.
