Laparoscopic Hysterectomy (Closed Uterine Removal Surgery)

What is a laparoscopic hysterectomy?

Laparoscopic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove the uterus. A small incision is made in the belly button and a small camera is inserted. The surgeon watches the image from this camera on the TV screen and performs the surgical procedure. Two or three small incisions are made in the lower abdomen. Customized tools are attached and used for removal.

Who should have laparoscopic hysterectomy surgery?

Most patients who need to have a uterus removed to treat abnormal uterine bleeding or fibroids can have a laparoscopic hysterectomy. In some cases it may not be possible. For example, laparoscopy is more difficult if the uterus is very large, has had multiple previous operations on the lower abdomen.

What will be needed before the operation?

The surgeon may have the patient see their primary care doctor before surgery to make sure there are no medical conditions that could be causing a problem with the surgery. A pre-operative appointment will be made before the day of surgery, which includes a history and physical examination, blood samples, and a visit to the anesthesia department. Patients should not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery. It is a good idea to tell your doctor about all the medications you use.

What kind of anesthesia will be required?

Patients are put to sleep under general anesthesia.

Is there a hospital stay after the operation?

Most of our patients go home the same day as their surgery. Sometimes we spend 1 night in the hospital.

What kind of improvement can be expected?

We encourage patients not to stay in bed. They should wander around the house and resume their normal activities as soon as they feel comfortable. Some women are well enough to return to work a week after surgery. Women who require more physical work should stay at home for 2-3 weeks. Women can resume exercise and sex 6 weeks after surgery.
