Insidious Result of Sedentary Life “Constipation”

Three golden rules for practical solution

The curfews, which have been implemented in our country as well as in the whole world with the Covid 19 pandemic, have caused constipation problems, which are a result of sedentary life, to be seen more. General Surgery and Surgical Oncology Specialist Prof.Dr. İlker Sücüllü explained the symptoms and treatment methods of Constipation, which negatively affects our health due to inactivity.

What is constipation and why does it occur?

Constipation is one of the most common “mistakes” among the people. Even in its definition, there is a situation that includes differences. So much so that all situations such as staying on the toilet for a long time, defecating with a lot of strain, going to the toilet at long intervals (once a day for 3 days or more) are all called constipation. Naturally, the evaluation and treatment of all these different definitions are different.

Constipation, the insidious result of a sedentary life

Having the habit of defecating regularly is the result of a healthy cooperation of many systems in our body. All diseases that affect metabolism, especially problems related to the thyroid gland, can lead to disruption of the defecation mechanism and consequent constipation. The need for toilet occurs through reflex mechanisms. Delaying this need continuously for social reasons can also cause constipation.

Constipation, the insidious result of a sedentary life

Now let’s come to the three golden rules we mentioned in the title:

  1. Exercise: It is one of the most important elements to have a healthy gut. A sedentary life may make the existing complaints of a person with constipation complaints more pronounced, and it may also cause complaints to be seen in a person who has no complaints about this issue. For this reason, it is important to pay attention to exercise, even at home. If it is possible not to do exercises immediately after meals, it would be more appropriate to plan them 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals.

  2. Consumption of At least 2 Lt of Water per Day: Lack of water, which is the building block of the body, causes a significant increase in constipation complaints. Adequate water consumption is the most basic need not only for the intestines, but also for the healthy functioning of all systems in the body. What is meant by sufficient liquid is not coffee and carbonated drinks, even their excessive consumption causes constipation complaints to increase.

  3. Nutrition with Fiber Foods: Physiologically, water is absorbed in the large intestine and pulp is formed. The most basic misconception here is that the closer the food content is to the liquid, the easier the person can defecate. However, the system works in the opposite way. The higher the amount of fiber reaching the large intestine, the better the constipation complaints. In fact, laxatives (diarrhea-causing drugs), which are frequently used among the public for the solution of constipation, in an uncontrolled way, are not a part of the solution but a part of the problem in the long run. In the daily diet, fiber-rich foods should be included instead of carbohydrate-rich foods that create a sudden feeling of satiety but do not form pulp in the intestine. For this purpose, nutritional supplements containing factors such as Psyllium (Karniyarık Grass) that contribute to the formation of pulp can also be beneficial.

It is a fact that we will have to spend more time at home than usual during this period when we have to go to hospitals unless we have to. Let’s not forget that there are no complaints on this subject, but if the newly emerged constipation does not improve with the practical measures recommended above, it should be investigated. The addition of bleeding during stool to the existing complaints necessitates a referral to a physician without delay.
