It covers many good feelings, weight gained, physical changes due to hormonal changes and many more. A tiny creature grows inside its mother day by day. In this case, mothers may worry whether their baby is getting enough nutrition. Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, disgust, etc. seen in the expectant mother during pregnancy. The inability to eat due to various reasons increases this concern even more.

Reasons for not eating during pregnancy:

  • Nausea and vomiting: The common cause of nausea during pregnancy is hormonal changes. The increase in the hormone HCG, also known as the pregnancy hormone, is the cause of nausea during pregnancy. Nausea during pregnancy can cause the expectant mother to not be able to eat.

  • Smell sensitivity: Sensitivity to smell during pregnancy also causes nausea during pregnancy. Even the smell of normally loved foods can be disturbing during this period. This kind of disgusting smells can cause or increase the complaints of nausea during pregnancy. In this case, you may still be unable to eat.

  • Stress: Pregnancy is as stressful as it is beautiful. Stress can also cause loss of appetite and inability to eat in the expectant mother.

  • Anemia: The need for iron mineral increases during pregnancy. If this increased need is not met, an anemia condition called anemia occurs. As a result, loss of appetite may occur.

  • Constipation:Constipation, which is one of the most common problems faced by pregnant women during pregnancy, can cause discomfort to expectant mothers and cause loss of appetite.

  • Heartburn/burning: Heartburn / heartburn, which is one of the common problems during pregnancy, occurs as a result of pressure on the stomach as the baby grows. These pressure and burning complaints can negatively affect the mother’s food consumption.

  • The growth of the uterus and the baby: Especially in the last stages of pregnancy, the pressure on the intestines with the growth of the baby can also suppress the desire of the mother to eat.

Nausea that prevents food consumption during pregnancy is seen due to hormonal changes and sensitivity to smell, and this nausea is normal. During pregnancy, the need increases as the baby gets its needs from the mother. However, in the first 3 months of pregnancy, which we call the first trimester, the baby’s needs are minimal and there may be no need to add to the daily nutrition during this period. Especially during this period, expectant mothers should not try to overeat by forcing themselves. Since babies do not need much, they are not adversely affected in this process. Expectant mothers can be comfortable in this regard.

Since the needs of the baby increase in the second and especially in the third trimester, the mother needs to increase her food consumption. If the expectant mothers cannot be fed adequately during these processes due to loss of appetite, both themselves and the baby will be adversely affected. In this case, a doctor should be consulted. The doctor may recommend medication for nausea or serum therapy may be required. If the state of hunger and thirst experienced due to the problem of not being able to eat has begun to affect the body negatively and the expectant mother cannot eat after the 10th week on average, it is useful to consult a doctor.

Nausea during pregnancy can make food intake difficult. Fluid and electrolyte loss may occur due to vomiting. In the expectant mother; Mild nausea that does not cause weight, fluid and electrolyte loss is normal and not harmful to mother and baby. However, if the fluid and electrolyte loss in the mother as a result of severe vomiting is not treated, it will harm the mother and the baby. This situation requires serious treatment and follow-up under the control of a physician.

In addition, various fruit juices (such as apple, lemonade), mint tea with lemon, drinks such as ginger tea, linden, buttermilk, and foods such as boiled potatoes, meat, yogurt, cheese can also reduce nausea.

  • Sensitivity to odors occurs during pregnancy and causes loss of appetite. In the process of nausea, heavy-smelling foods and perfumes that can cause nausea should be avoided.

  • Do not consume liquid foods with the main meals as they will fill the stomach too much. You can shift liquid foods to snacks.

  • Liquids should be consumed in sips, not all at once.
