Improving Tear Quality in Dry Eyes

The effect of the eye drops is 5-6 minutes, then the same complaints start again. The quality of tears is very important in dry eye. Quality tears stay in the eye, plaster the cornea and nourish the eye.

Move away from the notion that there are few tears. After listening to the patient’s complaints, the ophthalmologist said, “You have dry eyes.” The patient says, “My eyes are watering a lot”. It’s true, it’s watering, but it doesn’t help, it just disappears. It is true, when the tears are low, the brain gives the order for the lacrimal gland to work excessively. Testing is being done, tears are like a river…

The quality of the tears, the length of stay in the eye, the density, the nourishment of the eye and the oxygen in it are as important as the amount of tears. Tears should not flow, should not leave the eye.

What provides the quality of tears?

Balance: Mucous, aqueous (water) and (lipid) oil. If the balance between these is disturbed, dry eyes occur.

Aqueous: The amount of aqueous (water) part is important. The reasons that reduce the amount of aqueous (water) should be examined. Diseases that reduce tear production, drugs, vitamins, omega3… It should be considered.

mucin: Mucin moisturizing the surface is important. Conditions that reduce mucin production and disrupt its structure should be reviewed. If mucin is insufficient, the corneal epithelium of the front lens of the eye is damaged and stinging begins.

Lipid: The oil that keeps the tears in the eye and gets them into the eyes is important. MGD is a dysfunction of the Meibomius gland, which produces the oil portion of the tear.

It is important for these three to work with balance and to maintain the balance. If the aqueous decreases, the mucin and oil combine to form a burr.

Osmolarity:(Density) The osmolarity of the tear is also important.

Breaking time: The break-up time, the break-up time of the fluorescein dripped into the eye when you blink is also important. The shortening of this period means dry eye.

Nutrition and social life: Vitamins in the tear, omega3, electrolytes and nutrition, water intake, and kidney water excretion affect the quality of tears. Alcohol; Excess cigarettes and coffee impair the quality of tears.

Elimination of toxic substances and residues increases the purity and quality of tears.

Dry eye patients and systemic drug intake also affect tear quality.

How will we improve quality?

This job is a treatment job, your eye doctor will do it. Do not think that this will happen by dripping dry eye drops. It requires a series of examination and practice.
