How you eat is as important as what you eat for indigestion

Indigestion, which is manifested by abdominal bloating, pain or satiety after meals, is among the most common health problems in society. Indigestion, which occurs as a result of the digestive system not working well, can sometimes be caused by consumed foods or wrong eating habits. Associate Professor from the Department of Gastroenterology at Memorial Ataşehir Hospital. Dr. Züleyha Akkan Çetinkaya gave information about the precautions to be taken against indigestion complaints.

Do not swallow without chewing

Indigestion occurs as a result of the digestive system not working well. Digestion starts in the mouth and attention is paid to the necessity of chewing the food well. Chewing allows the food to be mechanically broken down, making it more digestible for the stomach, and mixing with the enzymes in the saliva, allowing digestion to begin in the mouth. Partially digested food is reduced by the acid secreted in the stomach and regular contractions and transmitted to the first part of the small intestine in the form of slurry. With the enzymes secreted from the pancreas, liver and gallbladder, the substances in the foods turn into building blocks.

Miraculous organ intestines

In order for the food to be broken down and broken down into building blocks to be useful to the body, it must be absorbed in the intestines, passed into the blood and transported to the organs where they will be useful. Small intestinal cells are needed for this absorption and for enzyme secretion. The surface of the small intestine cells is curved, not flat, in order to ensure greater absorption. The entire small intestine absorption area is approximately 250 m2, almost the size of a tennis court. In the large intestine, one of the greatest miraculous discoveries of today’s medicine; bacteria, viruses, yeasts are found in the microbiota. The total weight of the microbiota is about 2 kg, and the number of genes it contains is several hundred times that of the genes found in the human body. Here, digestion continues with various mechanisms, some of which are known and some are not yet known, excess fluid is absorbed and the remaining pulp is excreted by the properly functioning large intestine.
