High-heeled shoes cause arthritis

Our joints, which have an extremely important function such as enabling us to move, can be damaged due to some wrong habits. As a result, many health problems such as joint calcifications, ligament and shoulder injuries can occur. High-heeled shoes, which are frequently preferred by women, especially in the summer season, are one of the habits that damage the joints.

The health of our joints, which is directly related to the quality of our lives, depends primarily on recognizing their enemies and taking precautions against them. Otherwise, many problems such as joint calcifications, ligament injuries, meniscus injuries, shoulder injuries and some joint-specific diseases may occur. Moreover, the incidence of diseases due to joint damage is increasing day by day due to the negative conditions of modern life.

Obesity: Excess weight causes many health problems, as well as causing damage to the joints by creating mechanical weight. According to studies conducted at the Johns Hopkins Center for Arthritis Research: every 5 pounds of extra weight means 15-30 pounds of extra load on our knees with every step we take. Getting rid of the extra 5 kilos reduces the risk of joint calcification by 50 percent in women and 20 percent in men. Therefore, the solution to joint diseases is primarily to lose excess weight.

Wrong exercise and heavy sports: Exercise is like a double-edged sword for joint health. The balance is good, the excess is harmful. Heavy and high-paced exercises that are not compatible with age, gender, and general physical capacity do more harm than good. Studies reveal that kickboxing and brisk step exercises strain the joints. On the contrary, well-planned weight training, which increases muscle strength and mass, supports our joints. Aerobic exercises such as walking and swimming strengthen our muscles and joints by regulating blood circulation. Exercises such as yoga focused on balance, stretching exercises and pilates can prevent stiffness in the joints.

Sitting for a long time in front of the computer and television: Our bodies are designed to move. Therefore, acting like a functioning iron is good for joint health. Long hours spent sitting in front of the TV or computer and a general sedentary lifestyle are at least as harmful to our joints as heavy exercises or obesity. Our muscles, bone and cartilage tissue weaken, our joints stiffen and our metabolism slows down. In addition, the bone mass deteriorates qualitatively, which invites osteoporosis. Walking in the fresh air, dealing with flowers in the garden, any exercise that is compatible with age, gender and condition, without going overboard, has a miraculous effect on joint health.

Choosing high heels and bad shoes: Choosing shoes suitable for the foot structure is very important for joint health. Calcifications due to chronic strain in the joints of the feet, ankles, knees and lumbar spine occur at an early age in women who always prefer high-heeled shoes. In addition, high heels cause improper loading of the leg muscles on the joints, causing pain in the short term and muscle weakness in the long term. Likewise, shoes without heels with completely flat soles are undesirable for the health of our foot joints. Ideal shoe heel should be around 3-4 inches. According to studies, shoes with 9 cm heels put 7 times more stress on the foot joints than 3 cm heels. Narrow or pointed shoes that are not suitable for the general anatomy of the foot also cause painful deformations in the foot joints in the early period.

Bad eating habits: Unbalanced, fast food foods are also harmful for our bone and joint health. A diet rich in fiber and antioxidants, rich in vegetables and fruits, is necessary for joint health. Fish is said to be friendly to our joints due to the high omega 3 fatty acids it contains. Studies show that omega 3 fatty acids reduce pain and inflammation in patients with joint disorders. Foods containing calcium, vitamin E, K and D, and folic acid are also indispensable for joint-friendly nutrition. Recent studies have also shown the positive role of vitamin C in the treatment of arthritis.

Smoking: After all the known harmful effects, studies have shown that smokers can fracture more easily with smaller traumas. Indeed, smoking can cause osteoporosis by reducing bone quality and mass. Likewise, it is more difficult to treat diseases related to bone and joint health in patients with smoking habits.
