Gait analysis is an extremely helpful diagnostic method when performed and interpreted by specialist doctors or physiotherapists. It provides significant benefits in the treatment process, especially in cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s patients, those who have just started sports, those who have sports injuries, and people who use prostheses.
Gait analysis includes all studies to determine how to walk. Gait analysis consists of three stages. First, a physical examination of the patient is performed. Then the patient is observed by the specialist while walking. Then, with the support of various instruments, the patient’s walking, body movements and the condition of the muscles are recorded. In this way, walking is evaluated objectively by the expert. However, these two stages alone are not sufficient for gait analysis. A third step is also necessary for the gait analysis to give a fully accurate result. At this stage, certain points are marked on the patient’s body. The data obtained with the help of signal reflectors are transferred to the computer.
In our country, analysis is also done by only videotaping the march. However, it should be noted that gait analysis, which consists of examination and video footage, does not give accurate results. When the patient’s condition is presented with numerical data, re-evaluation of walking at regular intervals and treatment follow-up becomes easier. However, it is imperative that these numerical data are evaluated in competent hands. However, when evaluated by physicians who are experts in gait analysis, it is a diagnostic method that contains very important details.
Who is Gait Analysis Performed?
Gait analysis can be applied to patients of any age, starting from the age of 4 years. The fact that the patient can walk alone is important in terms of diagnosis. For this reason, it is not correct to perform gait analysis for children before the age of 4 years.
Gait analysis is especially applied in children with cerebral palsy, in patients with movement disorders, especially in Parkinson’s, and in people using prostheses. Especially in amputees, gait analysis is performed before prosthesis. After the prosthesis is attached, the treatment is repeated for control purposes.
According to the results obtained by gait analysis, which is an effective method in determining the treatment protocol in children with cerebral palsy, various treatments, primarily surgery, are applied. Regait analysis is repeated after 3 months at the earliest, preferably at 6 months. Treatment is evaluated according to this result.

Gait analysis is also an examination used for people who do or plan to do active sports. In childhood, gait analysis is used to determine which sports branch the child’s body structure is more suitable for.
Gait analysis is also done in people who actively do sports, in order to accurately determine the results of the treatments applied after the injuries. It is especially effective in determining the time to return to competitions for athletes who have undergone surgery.
