Responsibility is the responsibility of taking the consequences of actions and events that fall within the scope of one’s duty. Responsibility is taught to the child, starting from infancy and early childhood, through examples. The sense of responsibility cannot be created through coercion, the child must internalize this feeling. At this stage, communication and discipline within the family have an important place. Discipline is the individual’s awareness of their responsibilities and their acceptance of their natural and social consequences in their life. It is necessary to clearly teach the child his areas of freedom and certain basic rules from the pre-school period. For example, while playing in the children’s room, he has the freedom to distribute his toys as he wishes, but when the game is over, he should have the task of collecting. However, one of the biggest mistakes made here is that when the child does not collect his toys, the caregiver does this for him. With this behavior, the child learns that when he does not fulfill his responsibilities, he will not have to face the consequences of this, and someone else will do his responsibilities for him. As a result of these learnings, the child shows avoidance behavior and generalizes it. While the child is taught his responsibilities, rules set in a certain order at home will help. For example, washing hands before and after meals, having a routine bedtime, brushing teeth before going to bed, preparing the school bag from the night before. Before waiting for the child to fulfill his responsibilities in this area; It is important to explain to the child what is his responsibility, how he should do it and what consequences he may face if he does or does not do it in a way that he can understand.
One of the most important issues in gaining responsibility is the attitude of the parents and the communication they establish with the child. If the attitude to be adopted during this period is excessive tolerance, that is, unconditional acceptance of everything, in other words, a lack of discipline, the child may develop selfish and anti-social behaviors. Some of these behaviors are; There may be disrespect for others’ space, impulsiveness, and insensitivity to the consequences of their behavior on others. When another attitude to be adopted in this period is excessive authority over the child and an oppressive harsh discipline, different problems may be encountered. Some of these problems may be that the child develops dependent individual characteristics or rebellious-rebel individual characteristics. It is possible for these individuals to develop feelings such as anger, hatred, anger or fear towards the authoritarian person (parents).
In order for children to internalize a healthy sense of responsibility and discipline, parents need to display an attitude based on love. It should not be forgotten that children gain a large part of their knowledge by observing their environment and especially family members, and family members should fulfill their own responsibilities at this stage. While giving responsibility to children, it is important to leave them with the duties defined as their responsibility in this area, to open up a space of freedom for them and to enable them to learn from the consequences of their behavior.
