Foods and Drinks That Should Not Be Consumed While Pregnant

During pregnancy, extra attention is paid to nutrition by considering the health of the baby. Expectant mothers know that they should include many foods such as vegetables, fruits, eggs, fish and milk in their daily diet. So, do we know the foods that should not be included, the foods that should be consumed in a limited way, or the conditions that should be considered while consuming? Now I will give you a list of these topics. What should not be consumed or limited during pregnancy:

  • Alcohol: Alcohol should be completely avoided during pregnancy. Alcohol consumption causes miscarriage and stillbirth. I would also like to point out that you should stay away from smoking.

  • Unpasteurized milk and its products: Listeria bacteria can be transmitted from unpasteurized milk and foods made with it, and this infection increases the risk of miscarriage, newborn infection, premature birth and death of the baby in the womb. The pasteurization process destroys this bacteria. Therefore, pasteurized milk should be preferred. Foods such as cheese and yogurt produced from raw milk should also not be consumed.

  • Raw or undercooked meat, chicken and seafood: The risk of listeria in unpasteurized milk is also present in raw or undercooked meat products. There is also a risk of toxoplasma infection in raw meat products, which can endanger the life of the baby during pregnancy and cause birth anomalies. In this process, it is necessary to consume meat products by cooking them thoroughly so that there is no pinkness in them.

  • Raw and undercooked eggs: There is a risk of salmonella in raw eggs. Against this risk of contamination, eggs should be cooked thoroughly and consumed. In addition, mayonnaise made using raw eggs should not be consumed as dessert.

  • Sausage, salami, sausage, etc. processed meat products: As the rate of processing increases in production, the rate of microbe contamination increases. These foods also cause bloating during pregnancy due to their high sodium content.

  • Seafood containing heavy metals: Heavy metals damage the baby’s nervous system. Some fish and seafood should therefore not be preferred. Fish that contain high amounts of heavy metals are mackerel, swordfish, shark and tilefish. Although it is a good source of omega 3 and protein, it would be appropriate to limit fish to 2 per week during pregnancy.

  • Foods containing caffeine: Caffeine is not completely prohibited during pregnancy, but it should be strictly limited. Excessive caffeine intake can harm the baby. For this reason, it would be right to limit coffee drinking to 1-2 cups a day. It should also be noted that products such as tea, chocolate and cocoa also contain caffeine.

  • Some herbal teas: Herbal teas are often preferred during pregnancy because they do not contain caffeine. However, the effect of every plant in pregnancy is not known exactly and consumption of some of them during pregnancy causes some problems. Teas such as sage, cassia, basil, raspberry, ginger, and flaxseed can cause consequences such as miscarriage, premature birth, bleeding during pregnancy, and increased uterine contractions. Linden, chamomile, fennel, rosehip can be drunk during pregnancy. During pregnancy, any herbal tea should not be consumed without the approval of the doctor.

  • Unwashed fruit and vegetables:Again, due to the risk of contamination, fruits and vegetables should be eaten after thoroughly washing.

  • Large amount of liver: During pregnancy, liver, which is also a good source of iron, can be consumed in certain amounts, sometimes well cooked. However, liver also contains high amounts of vitamin A. Excess vitamin A has a toxic effect and can cause poisoning and birth anomalies. Therefore, it should be limited.

  • Sodas, canned juices , long-life canned foods, snacks, and other prepared foods:It is necessary to stay away from all kinds of ready-made foods that contain additives, high sugar and fat.

  • Products containing lots of sugar, simple carbohydrates and fries: Cakes, cakes, pies, desserts with syrup, frying, etc. Although the products contain high calories, they do not benefit either the mother or the baby. However, the weight that comes with these abundant calories jeopardizes the health of both.

  • Extremely salty foods: Pickles, some cheese and olives, chips, some sauces and prepared foods contain high salt. This also causes payment.

This is our list in general. You should act without forgetting that every food you take in your mouth during pregnancy and the postpartum period also reaches your baby.
