What is the most obvious way to understand eye disorders in our children?

Children are the future. The correction we make in their eyes means that we see our future. In addition, childhood diseases only give good results if they are treated at an early age. Exactly for this reason, our children’s eyes are squinting, both eyes cannot look in the same direction, they tremble, look at objects closely or do not follow them at all, squint their eyes, have difficulty opening their eyes in sunny environments, if the colors and sizes of the pupils are different from each other, constant burrs, redness, swelling on the lids If there is a miscarriage, we should consider that there may be a disorder in the eyes. Apart from all these, if there is a difference in the eyes of our children that you cannot name, you should definitely have an eye check.

Are our people sufficiently conscious about eye diseases in Turkey?

Compared to previous years, there is an increasing awareness thanks to the media, but it is not enough. As with all diseases, early diagnosis is very important in eye diseases. If the diagnosis is made before a permanent eye defect occurs, there will be no loss of function in the long term. Certainly, many eye diseases can be controlled with early diagnosis and treatment. In fact, even the lives of patients can be saved with an early diagnosis by just examining the eye. The eye is the only organ in the body and the diagnosis of rheumatic, infective, heart, kidney and bowel diseases can be made by doing an eye examination.

-What is eye pressure? What will be the consequences if high eye pressure is not treated?

Our eyes have an average blood pressure just like systemic blood pressure. Eye pressure should neither be high nor low to protect the health of our eyes. If the eye pressure is above normal, it is called eye pressure disease (Glaucoma, Blackwater Disease). In high eye pressure, the optic nerve, which has a very important function in the vision of our eyes, is damaged. In addition, although the eye pressure is low, there is another type of eye pressure that causes eye nerve damage just like in patients with high eye pressure, which is called normal tension glaucoma. It is usually a silent disease. If not diagnosed early, it causes irreversible loss of optic nerve and vision. Due to its insidious nature, it is necessary to have a complete eye examination at least 2 years after the age of 40 and once a year after the age of 50.

Sunglasses should have properties that block harmful rays from the sun. Just as dark colors are not enough, dark and non-protective sunglasses cause more damage to our eyes.

These substances protect our eyes from harmful lights and provide a clear image. Glasses are not just ordinary lenses containing a trick. For this reason, we should use the healthiest glasses we can use, no matter near or far. .Glasses made of poor quality glasses tire our eyes, do not provide good vision and can increase the passage of harmful rays to the eyes.

What are oculoplasty and strabismus surgeries? Can you give some information about these surgeries?

When oculoplasty operations are mentioned, eye aesthetic surgeries are understood. In addition, many surgeries and botox applications such as droopy eyelids and disorders, removal of eyelid tumors, tear duct and sac, eye disorders due to goiter are also performed within this scope.

Strabismus means gliding in the eyes. Strabismus is a condition that can be treated with glasses or surgery. The majority of our society does not know that strabismus surgery can be done. Strabismus is a condition that can be treated surgically at any age.

-How often should we go to the eye doctor?

Although it varies according to age, eye control is very important in children in the first year of life, at the age of 3 and at the age of 5. Your doctor will determine the next follow-ups according to your condition. In the future, eye control is recommended at least every 2 years after the age of 40 and once a year after the age of 50.

Apart from this, eye control should be done frequently in case of any eye complaints or a systemic disease.

While eyeglasses control should be done with an interval of at most 6 months in childhood, the controls should not exceed two years even in the period when eye numbers stop progressing. If we do not see as clearly as before with our glasses, if we squint our eyes, if there is pain, burning or redness in our eyes, we should definitely go for a check-up, thinking that our glasses may not be suitable for us anymore.
