Learning is something we humans do. In the past, it has ensured the continuation of our species and made us easily adaptable. Learning equips our minds with the skills and abilities we need. The life of an independent individual is unthinkable without learning.

There are many forms and types of learning. Therefore, rather than thinking of learning as a single process, it may be more realistic to think of the word “learning” as a term that refers to a wide range of mental events in the mind.

Even in the prenatal period some types of simple learning can take place. Babies start getting opportunities to learn soon after they are born. Although their brains are not fully developed, they make rapid progress in learning. Even in the first six months, it’s clear that babies are active learners, and it relies on learning to make good progress. In other words, learning is not actually a process that starts with school. The child who comes to school for the first time already has many pieces of knowledge that a 5-year-old will need and is a specialist student who has acquired many important skills.

However, one of the most important events that change the lives of families is when their children start school. This exciting and difficult process may not always proceed as expected. A number of problems experienced in the first year of school, especially when literacy and basic mathematical skills are learned, can deeply affect the entire educational life and learning processes of children.

Dyslexia with its accepted definition today; It is a developmental learning disability that is seen in academic skills such as reading, writing, and mathematics, despite normal and supernormal intelligence. It is important to see dyslexic children as children who learn differently and it should not be forgotten that they can learn when they are given an education prepared by a special education specialist for the areas they have difficulty with.

Since dyslexia is not known enough by educators and families, children with this special condition face many problems both in the school and in the family and environment. At the beginning of these problems is the loss of self-confidence known as “learned helplessness”. Because the child may need to learn in very different conditions in the school environment, which he has not encountered before. This environment is already a difficult enough transition for children. On top of that, the fact that the child has different learning processes compared to other children and that the educators do not have sufficient knowledge on these issues makes the process even more difficult.

Due to all these reasons, especially if parents see their children as competent in some subjects, but especially behind the class average in academic terms; should consider this process as an opportunity to get to know their child better, rather than thinking that their child is incompetent, lazy or incompetent. It is the most important step to remember that every child has a unique and unique world and to prepare the most accurate learning program by trying to get to know them.
