Depression; It is a psychological disorder that is common in society and manifests itself mainly with depressed mood or loss of interest. These accompanying symptoms include fatigue, changes in appetite, inappropriate feelings of guilt or worthlessness, sleep disturbance, difficulty concentrating or maintaining attention, and suicidal thoughts. In order to diagnose depression, these symptoms; It must be present almost every day for at least two weeks and impair the person’s functionality.
There is no single cause of depression. Various psychological, biological and social factors can cause depression separately or together.
Depression; It negatively affects almost every area of work, family, social and daily life and can make it more difficult for the person to get out of the way. For example; It prevents the person from doing the things that will be good for him, and unless the person does the things that will be good for him, his depression gets worse. Getting out of such a vicious circle is not as easy as it sounds.
Among the people, depression is a ‘weakness’; can be defeated by ‘will’; There are many misconceptions that it is not a disease and that it can heal on its own. However, contrary to these and similar stereotypes, depression is a disease that needs to be treated. And because of these false beliefs, many depressive patients lose time in seeking treatment.
Although there are various methods used in the treatment of depression, drug use is one of the most preferred ones. However, various studies have shown that drug therapy alone does not eliminate the risk of recurrence after drug withdrawal. For this reason, it is recommended that people with depression receive psychotherapy. One of the therapies used alone or in combination with drug therapy for mild to moderate depression is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. In the treatment of depression with Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, the cognitive processes and thought contents of the person are examined, behavioral patterns that reinforce depression (such as social withdrawal) are discussed, and also, behavioral techniques are used to ensure that therapy is not limited to sessions.
