There are dozens of techniques described in the literature for breast reduction surgery. For larger breasts, in addition to the round and vertical incisions, a horizontal incision is added along the inframammary fold (Figure 3). Only the last mentioned inverted “T” shaped technique is preferred by many surgeons around the world. IS THERE A SCAR AFTER BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY?

The clarity of the scar that will remain after breast reduction surgery varies according to three things. These are the technique applied, the genetics of the person and environmental factors. In order to reduce the amount of scarring, techniques with less scarring listed above may be preferred in suitable patients. You have no chance to change your genetics to leave less scars. However, by not smoking and eating a diet rich in vitamin C and protein, you can reduce the clarity of the scar that will remain. Although it is possible to try to reduce the clarity of the trace that will remain, unfortunately it is not possible in today’s technology to leave no trace. If the methods that would leave no scars were described, for example, we would have done the nose surgery directly over the nostrils rather than through them. In addition, Associate Professor Haldun Kamburoğlu has developed new techniques to reduce scar clarity during his aesthetic surgery residency in Europe. After your surgery, special creams will also be prescribed to reduce scar clarity and the possibility of puffy scars.

CAN I GIVE MILK AFTER BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY?

In breast reduction surgery, a significant portion of your milk ducts are preserved. Under normal conditions, you can give milk through these channels. However, since some milk ducts are removed with the reduction process, there may be a decrease in the amount of milk. Various studies in the literature have shown that the remaining milk ducts are usually sufficient for you to feed your baby. If breastfeeding cannot be achieved after the surgery, the main reason for this may be the patient’s inability to breastfeed due to hormonal or genetic reasons. Milk ducts cannot be preserved if only the nipple is carried as a free patch. Although this technique is rarely required, it is a method that can be preferred only in very large breasts (for example, 2 kg from each of them). AFTER BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY, IS THERE A PROBLEM WITH MY BREAST TIP?

HEALING PROCESS

It is generally recommended to stay in the hospital for 1 night after breast reduction surgery. Drains can be used to prevent leaks that may occur inside. These drains are removed in about 2 days on average. It is possible to shower after three days of dressing. It is essential for best results that you apply the prescribed medications and creams as described after the surgery. Just before discharge, you will be put on a special bra and you will be asked to wear this bra for 1 month. Depending on the technique applied, the time it takes for your breast to take its final shape varies. Generally, in methods with less vertical scars, it may take up to 6 months for the breast to take its final shape, while in the reverse “T” method with more scars, this period is 1-2 months. As the swelling decreases, the shape of your breast will begin to appear more clearly.
