Botox injection / aesthetic chemodenervation

Botox (botox), “ Botilinum tox ini” is the abbreviated trade name. There are other brands of drugs on the market as well. It is a toxin produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum, which reproduces in canned food and causes food poisoning.

Botox acts at the neuromuscular junction by temporarily stopping the stimulation from the nerves to the muscles for 3-12 months. After it was determined that it paralyzes the respiratory muscles by mixing with the blood in high amounts in canned poisoning, it was produced under laboratory conditions and started to be used in medical applications. It is primarily used to prevent muscle contractions in spastic patients and to treat strabismus. At the beginning of the 1990s, it has been widely used all over the world for the purpose of removing wrinkles on the face. It is also widely used in the treatment of excessive sweating. In recent years, very useful results have also been obtained in the treatment of migraine. Although aesthetics is the first thing that comes to mind when botox is mentioned, 3 of every 4 botox used in our country are for non-aesthetic diseases.

Botox gives very successful results especially in the correction of the lines on the forehead called the upper face area, wrinkles on the nose and the appearance of aging around the eyes known as crow’s feet. Because it is not easy to correct the wrinkles in this area with aesthetic surgical methods, in addition to these surgeries, botox should be applied. Another advantage is the lifting effect of the eyebrow edges. In addition, in some people, the tip of the nose moves while talking and especially laughing, often with the upper gums appearing. Botox can also be useful in these people. Although not as effective, it can also be applied to lip lines (cigarette lines) and neck bands.

After the skin is cooled a little without the need for any anesthesia, the procedure is completed with a very fine-tipped needle and injections that last 3-4 minutes and feel like a mosquito bite. Some people may experience a headache or flu-like effect. Its effect occurs after 2-3 days. Although the duration of the effect varies from person to person, it lasts for an average of 6 months. Persistence has been shown to be prolonged after consecutive botox injections.

Although Botox is a non-permanent method that needs to be repeated at regular intervals, it is highly preferred today because it is a relatively inexpensive treatment that does not require surgery, is easy and painless to apply, has a quick effect and does not require any rest afterwards. Although it is used so frequently, no serious problem has been encountered. It is not recommended for pregnant and lactating mothers. Even if a wrong application is made, there will be a return within 3-4 months at the latest. However, its application by an experienced plastic surgeon who has knowledge of facial anatomy is important in terms of both avoiding undesirable results and obtaining better results.

Misconceptions about Botox

1-Botox thickens the lips and swells the face.

No. Botox is not a filler. For this purpose, we use the person’s own fat, tissue or fillers such as hyaluronic acid.

2-Botox is snake venom, there is a risk of death.

No. Botox is produced with the same laboratory techniques as commonly used vaccines and antibiotics. It is not obtained from any animal or insect. It is impossible to kill a person with botox on the market.

3-Botox makes a devil face. It makes the person look soulless.

It is impossible to cause such a situation with botox alone. Botox is mostly effective on the upper face. When used appropriately, the angry and sad image such as frowning, astonishment is reduced and a softer mood image appears. Such gestures will not bother you in normal life if you are not a professional player. Moreover, if you have a sullen and irritable appearance, botox will seem like a medicine to you.

4-Once botox is applied, it is addictive and must be done constantly.

There is no such dependency medically. However, botox will provide a temporary improvement of 6-12 months. It is a fact that you will feel as if you have aged more when the effect of botox wears off, as you will forget your appearance before you had botox done during this time. Moreover, regular botox injections prolong the duration of action. In fact, it has been shown that protective botox injections made after the age of 30 delay aging.

5-Botox is an application for aesthetic purposes only.

False. Botox is a drug used in the treatment of many spastic diseases, strabismus, migraine, excessive sweating, and jaw pain. It is thought that only one fourth of the botox used in our country is used for aesthetic purposes.

6-When Botox is applied, no additional procedure is required.

No. Botox is used in addition to many procedures in plastic surgery. For example, it is very difficult to correct the fine wrinkles around the eyes and the forehead area with a face lift procedure. However, Botox cannot correct sagging in the cheek and neck area. For this reason, perfect results can be obtained by correcting sagging and bagging with surgical method and fine wrinkles with botox. Sometimes the wrinkles in the forehead area are very deep and botox may not be effective enough. In such cases, filler should be applied in addition to botox.

7-Botox is enough to raise eyebrows.

Sometimes. With Botox, eyebrows can be lifted just a few millimeters. In fact, botox is used to give an arc shape rather than raising the eyebrows. If your eyebrows are really low, other procedures need to be done.

8-Botox is a cheap drug.

Botox is in powder form and is used by diluting. It should also be stored in a cold environment. Theoretically, you can dilute it as much as you want and apply it to as many people as you want. However, the recommended dilution rate should be followed to get effective results. In this case, one vial of medicine can ideally be administered to two, maximum three people. In addition, after reconstitution, it should be stored in a cold environment and used within a few days. However, it is debatable how effective and long-lasting results cheap applications will create.
