Beware of persistent shoulder pain!

Persistent shoulder pain is an important problem that many people suffer from in the world as well as in our country. Shoulder pain, which is seen in one of every four employees today, complicates the daily life of the person and reduces the quality of life. Stating that incorrect postures in the shoulder area while working can cause tears in the muscles in the long term, “The relationship between these two problems is only recently understood all over the world. As the number of people working at the computer increased, we started to see muscle tears in the shoulder region, which we used to see mainly over the age of 50, between the ages of 30-40”.

Shoulder pain, which is common especially in those who work long hours at a desk or spend time in front of the computer for a long time, was tried to be treated with diagnoses such as ‘fibromyalgia’ or ‘myofascial pain’ until a short time ago. However, a new cause of these persistent pains, which greatly reduces the quality of life, has recently started to attract attention. The basis of this complaint is posture disorder.

Nerve compression is seen in the shoulders of desk workers. When standing bent forward for a long time or working with the arm extended forward, the scapula is angled forward more. This causes some muscles surrounding the scapula to work too much and some less.

For a healthy shoulder movement, it is essential that these muscles work in harmony. When the harmony is disturbed, the biomechanics of the shoulder joint are adversely affected and cause pain in the surrounding muscles. It should be emphasized that keeping the scapula in a tilted position for long hours can cause constant tension in the nerves adjacent to this bone and chronic pain behind the shoulder. Moreover, this can lead to long-term tears in the muscles that move the shoulder!!

A newly understood factor in the world!

While the incompatible operation of the muscles around the shoulder and the accompanying nerve compression may cause long-term tears in the muscles that move the shoulder, the relationship between these two problems has only just begun to be understood in the world. As the number of people working at a computer increases, I would like to point out that we are now starting to see muscle tears in the shoulder region, which they used to see over the age of 50, in the 30-40 age range. Both epidemiological and experimental studies on this subject are ongoing . We are also conducting an experimental study on the subject at Acıbadem University . We will share the results in the near future.

Remember to stand upright!

So can this situation be avoided?

Noting that among the measures, paying attention to posture is the leading one, he says that although many people know the importance of standing upright with their shoulders back, they do not pay attention to this in the midst of daily workload and stress, and that they can stand at the desk in a way that will increase shoulder pain.

In particular, people who work leaning forward for a long time need to make environmental arrangements that will keep both themselves and their shoulder blades in a more upright position. Applications such as sling wraps made from the outside do not ensure standing upright, on the contrary, they make our own muscles lazy. For this reason, we should try to stand upright on our own, prefer to stand upright. Although it is difficult in the beginning, the pain will decrease as it is returned to what it should be in the future. Besides, we should not stay in the same position for a long time and change positions as much as possible. Because staying still is more difficult than moving.

If there is pain that does not go away…

In the case of persistent pain, it is possible to control both pain and confirm the diagnosis with injections around the nerve. I should mention that in resistant cases, they can relieve the pinched nerve with the closed method through the shoulder. He says that if there is a tear in the shoulder muscles, they also repair it in the same session and treat it. Shoulder pain complaints, which are seen in one of every four employees today, can cause problems such as muscle tear in the shoulder in the middle and advanced periods if not treated. We should avoid working by leaning forward for long hours and arrange our surroundings in such a way that we can stand upright with our shoulders back. In order for this situation not to progress to muscle tear, we should avoid movements that force the shoulders, and we should definitely have further examinations, especially in shoulder pain that continues at night.
