Beware of Middle Ear Inflammation in Winter!

Sudden otitis media is one of the most common diseases in children, especially in winter. About middle ear inflammation, which occurs with symptoms such as ear pain, congestion and hearing loss in children, Medistate Hospital Otorhinolaryngology Clinic Head Prof. Dr. Rauf Tahamiler gave information.

THEY HAVE THIS DISEASE MANY TIMES UP TO THE AGE OF 5
Stating that upper respiratory tract infections, adenoids, large tonsils, allergies, weakening of the immune system, anatomical disorders and genetic predispositions are the most common causes of otitis media, Prof. Dr. Rauf Tahamiler said, “The fact that this disease is very common in children is due to the fact that the Eustachian tube is horizontal and short. Therefore, it is easier for bacteria to pass into the middle ear. Most of the children get this infection several times until the age of 5, and the fact that more than 3 times in 6 months have otitis media indicates that the disease has a tendency to become chronic.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Saying that the most common symptom of otitis media in children is ear pain, Prof. Dr. Rauf Tahamiler added, “Hearing loss, ear fullness and congestion symptoms are among the symptoms.” In addition, symptoms such as restlessness, frequent crying, and feeding difficulties may occur in babies,” he added, adding that a physician should be consulted as soon as possible. should be applied.

WHEN SHOULD I HAVE SURGERY FOR LIQUID IN THE MIDDLE EAR?
Fluid in the Middle Ear is a side effect of otitis media. Stating that after the definitive diagnosis of the child is made, it is aimed to eliminate the inflammation in the ear with the treatment of fluid in the middle ear with antibiotics and additional auxiliary treatments and precautions. Dr. Rauf Tahamiler, If the child has minor hearing loss and does not have excessive or frequent accumulation of fluid in the ear, no immediate surgery is required. However, if the episodes of fluid accumulation in the ear become frequent or continuous, the hearing loss gradually increases and if this finding is present in the tympanogram test, the surgery should be performed as soon as possible. Stating that middle ear surgery is done by scratching the eardrum or inserting a tube into the ear, Prof. Dr. Rauf Tahamiler stated that it is aimed to drain the fluid accumulated in the eardrum by scratching the eardrum, but if the fluid cannot be completely drained, the child is relieved by inserting a tube into the ear.

WHAT TO DO TO PROTECT MIDDLE EAR INFLAMMATION?
Babies should be fed with breast milk. Since breast milk keeps the immune system stronger, it also reduces the risk of getting sick.
– Pay attention to the hygiene conditions of babies and children
-Children should never be exposed to cigarette smoke.
Babies and children should be kept away from such places as much as possible, as upper respiratory tract infections spread faster in crowded environments and therefore the possibility of otitis media increases.
