After Lumbar Hernia Surgery

My dear patients, herniated disc is a very common health problem nowadays. Surgery should be considered as a last resort in herniated disc disease, in which a special treatment plan should be made for the progression of the disease and the complaints of the person.

What is a herniated disc?

Before giving information about the things to be considered after herniated disc surgery, “What is a herniated disc?” I want to explain briefly. There are five vertebrae in our lumbar region. Between the vertebrae, the so-called “disc”; There are structures that prevent the vertebrae from contacting each other and nerve compression.

The structures and functions of the discs between the lumbar vertebrae are damaged due to aging, excessive weight on the lumbar region, exposure to trauma, reverse movements or posture disorders. The discs herniate and as a result of herniation of the discs, the health problem we define as “lumbar hernia” occurs.

-Symptoms of Lumbar Hernia

The most common symptoms of herniated disc include low back pain, leg pain, numbness in the legs, loss of strength and limpness in the legs, difficulty in doing daily activities, and rarely urinary incontinence.

Important: One of the most distinguishing symptoms of a herniated disc is back pain that also affects the leg and foot area. The probability of having a herniated disc is very low in those who only complain of low back pain. When the discs between the vertebrae in the lumbar region herniate, they press on the nerves. Therefore, pain does not cause only low back pain to a large extent.

Dear readers, herniated disc is a health condition that affects daily life and reduces a person’s ability to move. As the disease progresses, the person may begin to not move due to the pain caused by the herniated disc. For this reason, those who experience the symptoms of lumbar hernia that I have just mentioned should apply to specialist doctors without wasting time.

When diagnosing lumbar hernia and determining treatment options, the patient’s history should be listened to and a physical examination should be performed. In addition, it is an important step to use imaging methods to confirm the diagnosis. When the diagnosis is finalized, a choice of treatment methods can be made. The main purpose of lumbar hernia treatments is to reduce the pain complaints of the patient and to reduce the limitation of movement. All treatment methods aim at returning patients to their daily lives.

There are different methods that can be preferred within the scope of lumbar hernia treatment. I can list these methods as follows: medication, rest, physical therapy, injection therapy and herniated disc surgery. Lumbar hernia surgery is the last resort, in order to recommend lumbar hernia surgery, patients must not respond to other treatment methods. In addition, conditions such as severe loss of strength in the legs, inability to control the excretory system and loss of sexual functions are sought.

Things to Consider After Lumbar Hernia Surgery

Yes, my dear patients, if you have been directed to have hernia surgery instead of non-surgical hernia treatment for your hernia problem, or if you have chosen this treatment method, you should pay attention to many issues in the post-operative period. Now I would like to tell you a few things about life after hernia surgery.

After your herniated disc surgery process is completed, you will be taken to your room. In the post-operative period, you may experience complaints such as pain and/or burning in your lumbar region. It is quite normal to experience these complaints, I would like to remind you not to panic. Necessary medications to relieve your pain complaint will be given to you with the approval of the doctors.

You will be prohibited from eating or drinking anything for the first 6 hours after the herniated disc surgery.

You can get up in the morning after the surgery and meet your toilet needs yourself. This will offer you great comfort.

After the operation, you will be asked to sit while eating and you will need to take short walks. If you do not have a pain problem, you can return home if the doctors approve.

After returning home, there will be many things to consider. In general terms, I can list the things to be considered after herniated disc surgery as follows:

  • Make sure your bed is comfortable. If possible, try to get a spring mattress. Likewise, you should pay attention to your pillow selection.

  • When lying down or getting out of bed, you should avoid sudden movements, first sit with support from your arms and then get up.

  • After the week you are discharged from the hospital, you will be recommended to walk. You should do the walk every day and increase your walking time as your fitness improves.

  • You should not consume cigarettes and alcohol during the post-lumbar hernia surgery. Remember, smoking and alcohol, which affect the wound healing process, can prolong your full recovery.

  • After hernia surgery, you should try to eat healthier than usual. Excess weight is one of the most important risk factors for herniated disc. Therefore, you should always pay attention to your weight after the operation.
