Advanced female age and poor ovarian reserve

In IVF treatment or vaccination treatment, if male sperm are normal, the most important factor determining pregnancy rates is the age of the woman.

There are approximately 2 million eggs in both ovaries of a newborn baby girl. When this girl starts menstruating, which is between 11-14 years old in your country, this number drops to 400 thousand. Considering that 1 egg is laid every month, a woman will lay approximately 400 eggs in her lifetime. In other words, the remaining eggs are lost every month. The number of eggs lost each month is 1000 per month. For this reason, the months are important in the presence of advanced female age.

Studies have shown that 10 years before the cessation of menstruation (pre-menopausal) ovarian reserve decreases. For example, if you will enter menopause at the age of 45, your ovarian reserve starts to decrease at the age of 35. Regular menstruation every month does not indicate ovarian reserve. It is a misconception to think that you can get pregnant as long as you have regular periods. Unfortunately, even obstetricians who do not specialize in infertility have adopted this false belief. When the patient is late, it is too late. For this reason, even if you are newly married at the age of 37-38, it is absolutely necessary to be evaluated by an infertility specialist. The picture below sums it up very well.

Special protocols have been developed to slightly increase ovarian response in the presence of advanced female age. One of these protocols is the “Femera protocol” and it has been accepted in the world with the joint work of Hacettepe IVF and Anatolia IVF centers. The study on this can be found in my academic publications.
