About Type-2 Diabetes

Our body needs energy to perform vital functions. This energy is met by various molecules found in foods. The most important is glucose, the building block of carbohydrates. As a result of the body being deprived of glucose to use as energy, a chronic disease called type-2 diabetes occurs. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the insulin-secreting cells in the pancreas are congenitally damaged.

• A hormone called insulin is secreted from the pancreas to meet the glucose needs of the cells. Insulin allows glucose in the blood to enter the cells. So it can be used for energy.

• However, sometimes insulin cannot provide this transition for various reasons. The insensitivity of the cells we call insulin resistance to insulin or the damage to the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas prevents the glycation of the cells. Insulin and glucose increase in the blood or insulin becomes insufficient, again glucose accumulates in the blood.

• The diagnosis is made when fasting blood sugar is above 124 mg/dL, non-fasting blood sugar is above 200 mg/dL, and HbA1c value is above 6.5.

WHAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED IN NUTRITION?We can make general improvements in our nutrition according to food groups.

• Yogurt, kefir, milk from dairy products should accompany the meal in main meals or snacks.

• We should take more of the foods that we call complex carbohydrates from the cereal group with high carbohydrate content into our lives. Brown breads (such as whole wheat, rye, wheat germ), whole wheat pasta, bulgur, brown rice, buckwheat (grecka).

• Eggs and cheese with high protein content for breakfast; Meat, chicken, turkey, fish should be present in meals.

• Nuts with high fat content; walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, peanuts, cashews, pistachios, pumpkin seeds should be consumed in between meals. Sunflower oil, olive oil, hazelnut oil should be used in a balanced way.

• Vegetables and fruits are sine qua non of nutrition, a total of 5-6 portions should be consumed per day, unless there are situations that need to be restricted. The glycemic index and glycemic load of fruits are important in those with diabetes. According to him, consumption should be provided, and dry fruits should be avoided in general.

• Legumes from vegetable protein sources should be consumed 1-2 times a week. It can be preferred as a juicy dish or boiled in salads.

Cooking methods are also a point that should not be skipped in a healthy diet. Instead of frying and roasting, methods such as baking, boiling and steaming should be preferred.

It is important to stay away from pastries, processed foods, refined flours, refined sugars, packaged foods with high sugar content.
